International Society for Performance Improvement Annual Conference
(05/02 Conference Review)
The ISPI Annual Conference was (as always is) a great experience.
Four days of brain overload: tidbits, tips, tools, assessments,
and vendors galore in a one-stop-shopping venue. The Cracker Barrel
session is something not to be missed. It is about three 20-minute
sessions on one specific aspect of improving performance. Perhaps
40 tables to choose from. After 20 minutes you select your next
target. Hurry, or you won't get a seat with your favorite author,
researcher or HPI guru. There is always a take-away from each session.
The days are packed with sessions from all industries, military
and education. How do you improve on it? Continue the work on developing
a community which welcomes people. It's a do-it-yourself conference
in finding your way around. The American Society for Training &
Development annual conference does a better job at giving the sense
of welcomeness. Both are well worth the expense. ISPI has a broader
perspective of which training is a subset. ASTD spills over into
performance improvement but without the depth and breadth of ISPI.
ASTD does great at focusing on what it should - training! The rivalry
between these organizations and the conferences is unnecessary.
Each can learn from one another. ISPI - lighten up.
